A renowned seaside resort on the Basque coast, Saint-Jean-de-Luz also owes its fame to its history and its architectural heritage. It was in the heart of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church that the marriage of Louis XIV to the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain was celebrated on June 9, 1660. Listed as a Historic Monument, this exceptionally decorated building contains a monumental Baroque altarpiece in carved gilded wood and three floors of oak galleries... Sumptuous!
Then it's time to explore the shopping streets of the old corsair city, before admiring the emblematic facades of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, such as the Maison de l'Infante and the Maison Louis XIV. Open to visitors, the Maison de l'Infante Joanoenia, built in Italian style in June 1660, where the Spanish Infanta resided during her marriage to Louis XIV, houses the so-called Infanta's bedroom and a superbly decorated 17th-century living room. Built in 1643 by a wealthy shipowner from Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the Maison Louis XIV, Lohobiague-Enea, where the young monarch stayed during his marriage, invites you to discover the history of Saint-Jean-de-Luz through its richly furnished rooms.
After your visits, take a moment to taste the city's famous macarons or to take a break at a café terrace in the pleasant Place Louis XIV, before continuing your journey towards the picturesque fishing port, then strolling along the Jacques Thibaud promenade, along the beach and the elegant seafront villas.
